Conferences began today and will continue Friday and Monday. There has been a lot of preparation happening in the classrooms for the students to be ready to share their portfolios with their parents. Parents were asked to sign up online the last few weeks. Conferences were scheduled for 40 minutes for kindergarteners and 1st graders. Part of the time was used for the student to show their parents what they are learning with math games or language arts activities then the student shared a part of their portfolio. The teachers and parents also had a time to talk. The second and third graders had a 25 minute conference scheduled where they shared part of their portfolio and parents and teachers could also share successes and concerns. The fourth and fifth graders get to do student led conferences. These are scheduled for 40-45 minutes with the student and parents talking for 30 minutes about the child’s portfolio and then the teachers sharing for about 10 minutes.
However, we added something new this year. Students could also sign up to participate in some extra activities, these activities are being repeated again for the next two days of conferences. If you have not signed up for your child to attend an activity, they are still welcome to join the sports or board games. The sports/outdoor/indoor games will happen again Friday and Monday 10:00 am – 12 noon and 1 pm – 3 pm. If your child wants to join they need to meet on the field or the gym lobby depending on the weather. The board games and puzzles will be in the cafeteria on Friday and Monday 9:00 am – 12 noon and 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. You and your child are welcome to stop by before or after your conference. A group of fourth and fifth graders will be going to the river again on Friday morning, but unfortunately there is no more space.
Here is a short video of some of the first day activities.
One other new item we have in the elementary hallway is our Tree of Gratitude. We would love to have you stop by and write on a leaf one or more of the things you are thankful for.
I am very thankful for the wonderful, dedicated teaching staff, for supportive parents and students who are eager to learn and share their learning. Also thank you to the many support staff, especially Miss Schellenberg and Miss Mori who helped with all of the scheduling, Mr. Smoker and Coach Eby for the sports, Mrs. Tsuji, Mrs. Ingulsrud, Miss Owen, Miss Sakamoto, Mrs. Hayashi and Mrs. Fong for help with the board games in the cafeteria and Mrs. Seely for the sketching. It is a privilege see our students growing and blooming.
